Walter Boys on Netflix: if the series reminds you of Vampire Diaries, that’s normal!

A hit on Netflix, My Life with the Walter Boys is still in the top of the most watched series on the platform. The love triangle between Jackie, Cole and Alex excites audiences and it has similarities to another complex romance.

Still in the top views on Netflix a month after its release online, My Life with the Walter Boys is a huge success on the platform. Despite divided opinions, this romantic series for teenagers seems to have won over its audience.

This romantic fiction, in the vein of The Summer I Became Pretty, follows the journey of Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez), a 15-year-old New Yorker who moves to Colorado to live with Walter family after the death of his parents and sister.

Her mother’s best friend, Katherine (Sarah Rafferty) then becomes Jackie’s guardian. The latter will live with Katherine’s children and nephews, who are very numerous. Among them are nerdy Alex (Ashby Gentry) and mysterious Cole (Noah LaLonde), who will turn Jackie’s head.

Like any self-respecting teen series, My Life with the Walter Boys is based on a love triangle subject to a multitude of twists and turns. And this three-headed romance in Melanie Halsall’s fiction, adapted from Ali Novak’s bestselling 2014 novel, is inspired by another successful series.

One girl + two brothers = complicated love triangle

Indeed, according to Alice Novak, the author of My life with the Walter boysthe love triangle between Jackie and the two brothers Cole and Alex draws its inspiration from another very famous similar love triangle: that in the novels and the series The Vampire Diaries!

“There’s always something to be said about love triangles, but this was inspired by Damon and Stefan from The Vampire Diaries”does she have to Entertainment Weekly. She began writing her novel at the age of 15 and at that time many young adult books were influenced by The Vampire Diaries.

The CW

If the fantasy series was a great source of inspiration, Ali Novak wanted to find the right balance in this love triangle in order to prolong the suspense but also to give enough depth to the characters so that fans can choose their “team” , like at the time of Vampire Diaries – and still today even if the series is over – between Damon and Stefan.

“We wanted to make sure both boys were the same weight. And I think there’s a lot more to this story than just a love triangle.”, assures Ali Novak. And the creator of the series Melanie Halsall will have plenty of time to explore this complex romance and the intrigues that arise from it even more since My Life with the Walter Boys has already been renewed for a season 2!

Fans of the novel have already been treated to surprises in the series adaptation, as Melanie Halsall points out: “We’ve already had to make changes to make it work as a TV series. The way the relationships play out, especially the one between Jackie and Alex, is slightly different than in the book.”

Moreover, the end of the first season of My Life with the Walter Boys is very different from the book, which augurs other surprises, notably on the love triangle between Jackie, Cole and Alex, given that the novel does not never had a sequel! Season 2 of the Netflix series will be completely new.

Season 1 of My Life with the Walter Boys is available on Netflix.
