Wanted cash – “policeman” scam: Fourth arrest since October

For the fourth time since October, “fake police officers” were caught: on December 19, two men presented themselves to a 73-year-old woman from Graz as “senior police inspector and police emergency call officer”. They wanted to take cash from the lady, but then, unfortunately for one of the alleged perpetrators, she became suspicious…

“Your fortune is threatened by a gang of robbers on the run. Get your cash from the bank and give it to us. We’re coming to her home address.” A “senior police inspector and a police emergency call officer” called a 73-year-old woman from Graz on December 19 with these facts. In order to underline the credibility of the conversation, the woman was also put in touch with a “police psychologist”. Trust built up with the woman Over several days, the two unknown men contacted the woman and thus gained her trust: the 73-year-old was already making her way to the way to the house bank. However, for security reasons, she was unable to withdraw cash. The old lady became suspicious and reported the whole thing to a relative. This was followed by a report to the Graz Lend Police Inspectorate. The officers immediately notified the Graz criminal investigation department, which in turn the Styrian State Criminal Police Office. German arrested two days later At the home address of the 73-year-old, the Graz criminal investigators arrested a suspect (21) from Germany on December 21. It was also possible to locate the man’s accommodation. Surveys uncovered another attempt at fraud by a 72-year-old woman from Graz. However, the “false police officer” did not confess. The public prosecutor’s office in Graz ordered his admission to the Graz-Jakomini prison. Police warns: watch out for the language of the fraudsters! An investigator from the State Criminal Police Office warns with such attempts at fraud to pay attention to the language: to imitate official language, sometimes a very rude and sometimes too casual tone.” Suspicious incidents should be reported to the police (133) immediately. “Especially if the alleged police officers have already announced further calls, it would be very important to inform the ‘real police’ as soon as possible.” Fourth perpetrator arrested in just three months Four perpetrators have already been arrested with the help of the Styrians since October. “With every single arrest, we gain new insights that help us with the investigation,” says the criminal investigator.
