The statement does not specify the identity of the participants in these discussions, which will be held the day the United Nations General Assembly begins to debate a resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
On Sunday, the G7 countries – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States – warned that they would take “other measuresadding to the sanctions already announced if Russia does not cease its military operations. The head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, assured that all members of the G7 were “totally alignedagainst the Russian attack.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he was putting the Russian military’s “deterrent force” on alert, which may include a nuclear component, an escalation that Washington called “totally unacceptable“.
