Facebook will set up a moderation group dedicated to content related to the war in Ukraine. The goal is to prevent fake news from adding confusion to an already complex situation.
We observe it during each conflict in the world, the number of false information explodes. Many accounts on social networks try to misinform and destabilize countries by distorting the reality of the facts.
Information, a war within the war
Once again, in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, many accounts abound on the networks, especially on Facebook, and spread fake news.
“The increase in disinformation campaigns has been enormous for two weeks. It started when Russian troops massed on the border, but for the past two weeks, the scale of these actions has been much stronger. We are undergoing the most intense disinformation campaign ever seen“, even analyzes Maria Avdeeva, research director of the Ukrainian think tank European Expert Association, interviewed by theExpress.
These various fake news campaigns are often carried out by fake social media accounts. Often created for a few hours, at most a few days, the accounts have time to broadcast many infox. It often appears that behind these fake profiles are actually state-affiliated groups.
Facebook decides to react
In order to counter the spread of problematic content, Facebook has just created a specialized unit to respond more effectively to the work of moderating content in “real time“. The establishment of this “special operations center“was announced at Figaro this Thursday, February 24, 2022.
“Experts […] including people whose mother tongue (Ukrainian and Russian, editor’s note)“will work in this group in order to”closely monitor the situation and be able to remove content that does not meet our community standards as soon as possible.“
The Meta group also announces that it is implementing a new function to secure the accounts of Ukrainian users. “We are launching a new feature in Ukraine that will allow users to lock their accounts. They will benefit from a higher level of protection and security on their personal information“, details the American company to our colleagues.
