It has been almost a year since the war in Ukraine began, on February 24, 2022. While the first curfew decreed by Russia for Orthodox Christmas has not been fully respected, the inhabitants continue to live, under the threat of the bombings. In Europe Evening WeekendPierre de Vilno spoke with Romain Gubert, journalist at the Point and special envoy to kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, to take stock of the conflict.

“In a month, this war will celebrate its one year, and we feel the exhaustion of people”, confides the reporter at the microphone of Europe 1.

The main concern facing young men

According to Romain Gubert, “today, compared to a year ago, there is no more concern that the Russians will land in kyiv, it is less coveted. On the other hand, what the last weeks showed is that Russia was systematically destroying infrastructure and that there were civilian casualties, even in kyiv,” the journalist said. This relates the main “concern”: “for all young men between 20 and 35, it is to go to the front, to find themselves mobilized, to be trained etc. They do not know when that they will be called up to go into battle,” he added.

Consequently, this triggers “the concern of families, loved ones”. “In addition, one has the impression in certain streets of kyiv to be in a garrison town, where everyone is in fatigues”, continues the reporter of the Point. “People are in training and they have two days off, so they come to see their relatives. They stay in civilian clothes,” says the journalist, describing that checkpoints were still in place in the capital of Ukraine.
