Warcraft mobile games: Blizzard gives up on a certain type of game

Big time for Blizzard, to say the least. Shortly after the announcement of the next extension of World of Warcraft, the editor returns to the attack with another good news. This Tuesday, May 3, he will reveal to the world his future mobile game based on the Warcraft universe.. The secret of this new title has been very well kept, and speculation is rife among fans, since we know nothing about the project, even its name. Yesterday, Jason Schreieremblematic journalist of the Bloomberg media, however confirmed that Blizzard had canceled its Warcraft GO game project (in reference to the augmented reality genre, Pokémon GO style).

Two games at the start, only one on the finish line

J.Schreier came to set the record straight since leaks suggested the possibility that two Blizzard mobile games were currently in the pipeline (in addition to Diablo Immortal). However, the journalist recalls that the Warcraft GO project was actually scrapped earlier this year by the publisher.

Still, Pokemon GO was likely inspirational to many developers, including lead designer Cory Stockton, who described himself as a “huge Pokemon fan”.

In addition, the Warcraft soil corresponded rather well to the genre, and it was easy to imagine facing the beasts and villains of Azeroth, surveying the real world, equipped with our simple telephone. Still, this project will not see the light of day. And you know what ? Maybe it’s not that bad.

A genre on which many have burned their wings

Pokémon GO has revolutionized mobile gaming. By interweaving geolocation and augmented reality, Niantic invented an ultra-innovative, accessible concept, which also encourages people to do a little walking. Many other publishers and franchises have tried to jump on the bandwagon, creating Pokemon GO-like with their own worlds. And we’re not talking about “small” franchises here. The Witcher Monster Slayer or Harry Potter Wizards Unite are two rather recent examples of “Go” titles… which have in common that they did very poorly.

It’s not Pokémon Go who wants. And it is perhaps with a certain wisdom, in view of these two examples of heckled games, that Blizzard has given up on this project, riskier than we think.

The publisher is therefore focusing on a single Warcraft mobile game, the first outlines of which will be seen on Tuesday, May 3.
