“Warning signal” to China: India is testing missile capable of nuclear weapons

“Warning signal” to China
India tests missile capable of nuclear weapons

Tensions between China and India have been mounting since last year’s bloody clashes. After reports on the test of a Chinese hypersonic missile, New Delhi is now stepping up. The military fired an “Agni-5” capable of nuclear weapons.

India has tested a nuclear weapon capable missile with a range of up to 5000 kilometers. The “Agni-5” missile was fired from an island off the east coast of India on Wednesday evening and fell into the Bay of Bengal, the Ministry of Defense said.

India had already fired the 17-meter-long “Agni-5” missiles, which can be equipped with nuclear warheads, several times for test purposes. Now the military carried out a test at night for the first time. In Indian media reports there was talk of a “warning signal” to China.

Tensions between the two nuclear powers had increased in recent months after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in clashes in the Himalayan mountains in June 2020. It was the worst incident in the border conflict between the two countries in decades. Since then, China and India have mobilized tens of thousands of additional soldiers to secure their borders.

Most recently, the alleged test of a hypersonic missile by China caused a stir. While the US spoke of a “very worrying” event, Beijing denied reports. Rather, it was a routine test for “reusable space technology”.
