Meta won’t have to wait very long: the light version of Messenger is no longer available on Android application stores. At least, if you’ve never downloaded it, because if you haven’t, you can always pick it up and use it until September 18. However, a Meta spokesperson clarified to TechCrunch that ” since August 21, people using the Messenger Lite app for Android have been directed to Messenger or FB Lite to send and receive messages “. The fallback solution would indeed be Facebook Lite. The social network’s lightweight app supports its messaging service and should be fine for those who still want to use a lite version of Messenger.
However, it is not certain that this alternative is suitable for everyone, because Facebook messaging users are not necessarily present on the social network (in the case of deactivated accounts, for example). For these, it will be necessary either to return to the platform, or to fall back on the heavier version of Messenger, which is not, it must be recognized, the lightest, the most stable, nor the simplest there is.
The announcement comes as Meta announced it was dropping SMS support on Messenger starting next month. However, as a consolation, users will be able to benefit from end-to-end encrypted conversations by default by 2024.
