Waste: a third of French people throw away their leftovers



En the midst of the inflation crisis, are the French wasting too much? This is in any case what seems to be a survey carried out by Censuswide for HelloFresh. According to this study, the French would throw away the equivalent of 67 euros of food each month, as noted by BFMTV. Respondents said that “between 26% and 50% of the products they buy end up in the trash”. While, still according to this study, the average weekly basket of the French would be around 81 euros on average.

“35% of French people regularly throw away food they no longer need. By buying only the quantity needed for each meal, the risk of waste would be limited,” explains Thomas avoirte, culinary expert at HelloFresh. The French are in fact in the habit of buying either in too large quantities, or of developing compulsive purchases, or simply of not managing the preservation of food, as BFM reminds us.

Combine waste reduction and economy

Limiting waste is, however, a way to save money, in a period when inflation is hurting the wallet: the food market could see its prices increase by 12% at the end of the year according to INSEE. Better managing your cupboards and fridge could be a solution to save, while Bruno Le Maire has already announced that prices will not go down until 2023.

The tariff shield making it possible to limit this inflation and therefore the rise in prices for homes will be maintained at the beginning of next year.
