The mobile version of YouTube TV is gradually expanding. We learned this week that the service began to deploy, first on iOS and iPadOS, the “Multiview” functionality which allows users to watch several programs in split screen. Expected later this year on Android smartphones, this function had already been deployed last year on the version of YouTube TV dedicated this time to connected televisions, recalls SamMobile.

An astonishing, even downright paradoxical, programming, since YouTube here prioritizes Apple devices to the detriment of Android smartphones and tablets, and therefore the ecosystem of Google, its parent company. Some users will therefore have to be patient for a while longer, with YouTube at this stage mentioning a deployment on Android in the coming months, without further details.

A fairly limited function for the moment

Shared by an iPhone user on Reddit, the photo above allows us to have a good idea of the form taken by this “Multiview” functionality on a smartphone. We learn that this option is accessible from the home tab, but that it is only available on a few sports channels at present. It also seems that it is more extensive in the United States than in France. Logically, YouTube should nevertheless extend this function to more channels later. And in the future, we can imagine that it will be possible to watch an episode of a series alongside a TV show and a football match, for example.

Note as an aside that YouTube TV recently introduced new interface elements on its version for televisions. In certain cases, the score of a match can thus be displayed alongside a video being played, and you can now quickly switch between two channels using a shortcut. Interesting new features, which will perhaps arrive on smartphones and tablets thanks to a future update.
