A high-performance watercooling solution has arrived on PlayStation 5, but we doubt your console will be affected. See why.

The record-breaking PlayStation 5 is an interesting console in more than one way, but not everything is perfect and Sony could, for example, have worked more on the cooling system to make the thing quieter.

To achieve something much more discreet, the EK company offers to switch to watercooling via its EK-QuantumX CoolingStation Monoblock for PS5. To be honest, it’s hard to see how this could be a success!

A water block revolutionary »

As it itself indicates in its press release, the EK company “ is not a little proud » to present “ a revolutionary water block » which refreshes « all critical components » of the PlayStation 5 which was recently updated.

On paper, the EK-QuantumX CoolingStation Monoblock for PS5 actually has all the makings of a quality product that will delight users who are a little annoyed by their console and its tendency to heat up. To do this, EK designed a monoblock which receives the entire PCB – the motherboard – of the console to ensure that all the components of the machine are affected by watercooling.

The PCB is then taken in a structure whose dimensions (232.85 x 212.5 x 40.15 mm), but above all the spacers coincide perfectly with the microATX PC format. Why this precision? Because once the assembly is complete, there is no question of placing the EK-QuantumX CoolingStation Monoblock for PS5 in the console. It is not suitable at all.

More than 700 euros total bill?

Complete, the solution proposed by EK is designed to take place in a microATX case which will also accommodate the necessary for functional watercooling: the EK-QuantumX CoolingStation for PS5 is just a water block.

So, in addition to the cost of the product itself, you have to add all the classic hardware to support a water block and the microATX case itself, it’s obvious. Problem is, the EK-QuantumX CoolingStation for PS5 already costs a whopping 453.68 euros if we are to believe the pre-order offer in place on the official EK website.

In fact, the total bill for the cooling solution for PlayStation 5 certainly exceeds 700/800 euros, much more than the console itself. You already have to be really motivated.

Goodbye Sony warranty… obviously

But this is not the only problem posed by this solution. Indeed, as you can assume – and see in the explanatory video – installing the kit requires completely disassembling the PlayStation 5.

An operation perfectly presented by EK, but which nevertheless remains relatively long: the manufacturer’s video lasts 12 minutes, but it is quite accelerated in many parts. In addition, make no mistake, it is not within everyone’s reach and you should pay attention to the points of contact between the water block and the components of the PlayStation 5.

Finally, even if this is undoubtedly no longer such a critical point when we are at this stage: there is obviously no longer any question of the slightest guarantee on the part of Sony once such treatment has been applied to console. Oh yes, one last thing, using the additional M.2 SSD of the PlayStation 5 involves even more costs. Necessarily.

The thing is aimed at an audience of passionate, DIY and motivated players, but we still find it hard to believe that EK manages to convince many people.
