Waymo: two autonomous cars cause an accident, the software is recalled


A double accident occurred at the beginning of December which pushed the Google subsidiary to recall its embedded software on February 13, 2024. In a press release published on its site, Waymo defends itself by explaining that the van was not parked properly because “Straddling two lanes, one to turn, the other to go straight†. The company believes that the artificial intelligence of its vehicles misjudged the movements of the van, hence this news item.

Fortunately, there were no injuries during this collision between three vehicles, only minor material damage was reported.

Waymo autonomous cars have been circulating on the streets of Phoenix since 2020. Los Angeles welcomed its own fleet the following year. Despite their popularity, these vehicles are talked about for numerous accidents and problems. Some residents are even opposed to their circulation and the authorities are looking closely at Waymo but also its competitor Cruise.
