What if the GPS available on our smartphones ended up being less efficient? This is the trend emerging following the announcement of a series of measures.
The French government will soon apply new obligations to navigation applications such as Google Maps and Waze. Initially, they will have to broadcast messages aimed at making the user aware of the ecological cause. Recommendations like drive at 110 km/h instead of 130 km/h on the highway will appear. CO emissions2 for each journey will also be displayed, the carpooling places, better indicated, and the routes on which it is necessary to drive more slowly may be preferred.
A controversial measure
But that will not be all! Indeed, the government wants to force GPS to no longer systematically put forward alternatives to avoid traffic jams. Several French municipalities have expressed their dissatisfaction when they see dozens of vehicles disembarking there with a view to dodging an overloaded road. Alternate routes usually advised by services like Maps and Wave to save driver time.
Therefore, to continue to offer these secondary routes, the travel time will have to be reduced by at least 10% compared to that obtained via the main route. The objective is to no longer constantly divert vehicles to small roads that are often not well suited to heavy traffic. Thus, Google Maps and Waze will no longer necessarily offer the fastest routes.
