Prevention is better than cure. Especially when talking about road accidents. To do this, Waze is testing the implementation of the Black Spot Alert service, which will display accident-prone roads on the screen of motorists. These will be highlighted by a red display on the navigation map and will be accompanied by a pop-up notification.

Revealed by the Israeli media Geektimethis new feature is currently only available in beta, and only in Israel.

These high-risk routes will be flagged due to data collected by the Waze community. Drivers can report accidents on their routes with Waze to alert others. If a certain number of accidents are noted on the same road, this road will be considered as dangerous.

The display also comes with a pop-up window, which is only displayed once so, as written The Verge, “to prevent precaution from turning into anxiety”.

Nothing has yet been communicated on the implementation of this new feature, whether it is a launch date or the countries concerned. But if ever the Black Spot Alert appears in your home one day, it will be as an optional feature.

This is the first novelty since the merger of the Waze teams with those of Google Geo. If the company was bought by the American firm in 2012 for nearly a billion dollars, it is only in 2022 that the teams of Google Maps, Earth and Street View – gathered under the name of Geo — merged with Waze. Caroline Bourdeau, public relations manager for Waze, told The Verge that “teams will benefit from increased technical collaboration”.
