On the eve of the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft has opened up in an interview. The promises of yesteryear have clearly been kept, as the teams behind the upcoming title, set in the Japanese feudal era, have clearly pushed the boundaries of what they can do.

A desire to do better for Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, formerly known as Assassin’s Creed Red, has been long awaited. Scheduled for November 12, no less than 4 years of development will end for the developers. Until now, no other episode in the Assassin’s Creed series has taken so long to be developed, but why?

Believe it or not, it’s not a matter of budget or any concern during the design or production of the game, quite the contrary. We always want to do better, and that’s what we’re trying to do with Shadows. […] We push our limits in what we can do.

During this interview, we were able to learn many things, including a notion that was thrown in the trash: haste. While there are imponderables in a business, the development team reportedly expressed the desire to take the necessary time (within reason for the business) to develop AC Shadows.. And so four years have passed; it may seem like a long time, but that is not necessarily everyone’s opinion.

Karl Onnée says that four years of development is actually the perfect balance to move from design to production. He explains that development could have taken less time with more people, but that inevitably wouldn’t have necessarily given more time to iterate, get feedback from players and the team to see what works, and what doesn’t, and analyze how it is possible to make improvements.

Overall, we see Assassin’s Creed Shadows as a true love letter; a project that has been carefully carried out.

Create a universe that touches the public

Still in the same interview conducted by GameIndustry, Karl Onnée also spoke about the setting of Shadows. He said that the work that went into Assassin’s Creed Shadows was the result of experience gained from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, hardware power, the new version of the engine, but also a clear vision of what they wanted to do.

Ubisoft clearly wants to reach a wider audience with its new opus, especially the Japanese. Thus, authenticity, respect and learning were the key words for this chapter.

We come from a humble position, we know nothing and we have to learn everything from scratch (it’s about culture, architecture, etc.). We make sure to respect things, because it’s something very important to the Japanese, as it is in many other countries. […] We want to build something that, when they see it and play it, they will recognize their own country.

The lush scenery and lifelike vistas were among the reasons (among others) that players loved Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. So, We strongly hope that the gaming experience and immersion within Assassin’s Creed Shadows will live up to players’ expectations. and will surpass the idyllic trip we had in Greece 6 years ago.
