The Duke of Sussex made video calls from California with the young winners of the 2022 WellChild Awards, an annual event organized by WellChild to highlight exceptional children living with life-limiting illnesses. It was during one such conversation that he brought up an amazing, never-before-named family member.
Gerald, a full member of the family
Among the 2022 winners of the WellChild Awards, there was a little girl with the first name of Shakira, who spoke English sign language. The little girl, accompanied by her parents, had to endure no less than 46 surgeries while battling a tumor and a rare brain infection. Behind her during the video call stood a balloon in the shape of a giraffe which made Prince Harry react who wanted to know more, and took the opportunity to make astonishing revelations. “How long have you had this giraffe? Because Archie has also had a giraffe for a very long time. We call him Gerald.” said Archie and Lilibet’s dad. It is in fact since the award ceremony, on September 8, that the giraffe sits in Shakira’s room, which seemed to surprise Prince Harry.
Very moved by the courage of the little girl’s family, Harry wished to acknowledge the support they were showing alongside Shakira “I don’t know, because I’m not in the same situation as you, but having worked with this charity for over a decade, I know how difficult it is and I respect you and hats off to you. you, he told them, because the kids are always the ones who somehow manage to get through each day with a smile on their face And that’s for the parents, the moms and dads and siblings that always seemed the hardest to me.” Prince Harry concluded his call with Shakira’s family and the baby girl”i just want you to know that i know, we recognize the personal sacrifice you have made every day, and how hard it has been and how hard it continues to be, just amazing, i can’t begin to imagine what you’ve been through, so I hope you got something out of the night and I’m glad to see that award on the table and Shakira looking great.”
“Archie is very very busy and Lili is learning to use her voice”
With another winner, a four-year-old boy named Henry who wanted to hear from the children of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke of Sussex always executed with a smile. “En answer to your question Henry, Archie is very very busy and Lili is learning to use his voice which is great” he replied. Archie is almost the same age as little Henry, having turned three in May, while Lilibet turned one during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee festivities.
The Duke of Sussex also apologized to the families and children for not being able to attend the awards ceremony, September 8, the day Queen Elizabeth passed away. He was, however, in London with Meghan Markle to attend, but events rushed and he had to go to Balmoral urgently.
