we finally know when Paris will modernize its metro

If you had imagined that in 2022 it would be possible to take the metro with a simple smartphone, you are wrong. With the exception of a few models, this is not possible. Île-de-France Mobilités has communicated a lot of information on the changes to come.

Paris, and more generally Parisian transport, is lagging behind in the dematerialization of transport tickets, although several experiments have been carried out. The one with Orange and Sosh has been over since December 2020. That of Samsung too. Despite everything, the launch of the Navigo pass and metro tickets on iPhone and Android is approaching. Following an exchange with the boss of Île-de-France Mobilités, Numerama delivers fresh information on the planned schedule.

Android: it’s available, but not everything is perfect

As Numerama explains, version 8.0 of the IDF Mobilités application, available on the Google Play Store, allows you to buy transport tickets on all Android smartphones. You no longer need a Samsung smartphone or an Orange SIM. As explained earlier this year, HCE technology is used. IDF Mobilités therefore does not use Google Pay.

Île-de-France Mobilités now calls on the HCE. This then allows Android smartphones equipped with an NFC chip to become a dematerialized ticket to take the metro or RER in Île-de-France.

Note, however, that for the moment, there is no annual Navigo pass, nor the Liberté+ pass and destination tickets, from point A to point B. You will have to wait until the end of 2023. Other limitation: since the IDF Mobilités network is not centralized, it is impossible to synchronize tickets or a monthly subscription between your physical card and your smartphone. You will therefore have to choose between your smartphone or your physical Navigo card. Finally, the tickets are stored in your smartphone, they are not linked to your account. So don’t lose your smartphone.

Numerama specifies that you need an Android smartphone equipped with NFC, with at least Android version 8.

iPhone: still a little patience

Numerama has confirmed that Apple is working with IDF Mobilités to integrate the Navigo pass and metro tickets on iPhone. To carry out this work, Apple even requested RATP gantries which were sent to Cupertino, to Apple’s headquarters. This integration is planned between July and September 2023, it will therefore be necessary to be patient. Nicolas Lellouche, tech journalist at Numerama, thinks that the functionality could be integrated directly into iOS 17. In any case, in the logic of the schedule communicated by IDF Mobilités.

Concretely, in the Apple Wallet application, where the other public transport services on iPhone are housed, it will be possible to buy single tickets, notebooks (x10) or day passes. At that time, you will be able to pay with Apple Pay. For other titles, such as weekly or monthly subscriptions, it is essential to use the IDF Mobilités application.

Today, it is already possible to use the IDF Mobilités application to load your Navigo pass by buying single metro tickets, for example. The operation takes about thirty seconds, and it avoids having to queue at ATMs.
