The director of “Men in Black” revealed an anecdote about Will Smith on the set of the cult 1997 film, a somewhat embarrassing incident that resulted in the evacuation of the set for three hours…

It was during the “Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa” podcast that Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld dropped a bombshell – almost literally! The filmmaker revealed that the set of the 1997 action comedy had to be evacuated.for about three hours” because of a Will Smith fart!

You know it, Will Smith starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Blackwhich grossed $584 million worldwide, becoming the third highest-grossing film of 1997. Combined with the success of Independence Day the previous year, the feature made him a global superstar.

According to Sonnenfeld, the incident occurred during the scene in which Smith and Jones are in a transforming car that moves at super-fast speeds and flips. To film the sequence, the two actors had to be “hermetically sealed” in the basket which served as a car.

There are locks to prevent it from opening and falling”, said the director. “I say, ‘Start the camera.’ And I hear Will Smith say, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Tommy, I’m so sorry. Baz, take the ladder.’ And you hear Tommy say, ‘It’s okay, Will. Don’t worry, Will. Don’t worry, Will.’ At that point, I don’t know what happened, right?

He continued: “So we run towards the ladder. Yes, Tommy sticks his leg out as the ladder arrives, and rushes down the stairs. And what happened is Will Smith is a whoopee”, simply declared Barry Sonnenfeld. “It’s just that some people are. And you really don’t want to be in a very small, tightly sealed space with a Will Smith fart. You don’t even want to sit next to him at the Disney ranch.

He finally concluded: “We evacuated the set for about three hours. And it’s incredible. No, he’s a lovely guy. It’s just that he farts. Some do, others don’t.

The director also signed the two sequels of Men in Black with Will Smith : Men in Black II in 2002 and Men in Black III in 2012. Neither film reached the box office heights of the 1997 original, however, and Josh Brolin also joined the cast in the third installment.

Men in Black (1997) can be seen streaming on Netflix.
