We know a little more about the series derived from Matt Reeves’ Batman

Whereas The Batman a hit in theaters, its director Matt Reeves gave a little more information on the series in preparation in the universe of his film. One will focus on the Penguin, the other will take place in Arkham Asylum.

The success of the movie The Batman gives wings to its creator. With already 250 million dollars gleaned internationally during its first weekend, the feature film by Matt Reeves has ensured a certain longevity on the big screen – two other films should follow – but also on the platforms of streaming. In this case, it is on HBO Max that the universe of Bruce Wayne version Robert Pattinson will be developed. The projects in question are still in their infancy, it could even be that the platform is available in France by their release.

Originally, two projects had been mentioned by Warner. The first will concern the character of the Penguin, played on screen by an absolutely unrecognizable Colin Farrell. A series that will trace the rise in the underworld of Oswald Cobblepot in “american dream in gotham“, according to Matt Reeves, who quotes scarface among his main sources of inspiration.

A horror series in Arkham Asylum

The second spin off in development was to take place before the events of the film and focus on the Gotham police, portrayed as massively corrupt in the latter. We would have followed a crooked cop evolving in this toxic universe and his confrontation with the honest Lieutenant Gordon, played by Jeffrey Wright. A thriller that had already found its producers and even its main screenwriter, the creator of Broadwalk Empire Terence Winter. But since this first information, the situation has evolved.

Guest in the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Matt Reeves revealed that this pitch has been shelved indefinitely. But another project has apparently emerged from the ashes of the previous one. Exit the intrigue around Gotham PD, already largely evoked in the series Gotham, the spotlight is now on Arkham Asylum, this prison specially designed for the most dangerous criminals in the city, where we meet a good part of the bestiary of the Batman universe. Inspiration is now more focused on “the horror“, with an asylum depicted as “a haunted houseby Reeves.

The same way Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character.“, confided the director. A good way to use and introduce certain personalities well known to comic book fans and seen in the film. The new showrunner of this series should be Joe Barton, who worked on Invasion. With a lot of scenes, especially in the fights, reminiscent of Rocksteady’s Batman games, it is in any case not surprising that the universe of the masked vigilante is moving back to Arkham.
