The new DCU is slowly but surely taking shape behind the scenes. As the writers’ strike continues to rage in Hollywood, casting for Superman Legacy continues. James Gunn, Peter Safran and Warner Bros. are cautious. They know they have no room for error with their choice. The ousting of Henry Cavill in favor of a younger person always has a hard time passing with the fervent community of fans of the actor. However, three names stand out and things should materialize very soon. Here are the three candidates in the running.
Three serious candidates for Superman Legacy
The Flash has been released in theaters and will be the last DCU film as we know it. James Gunn and Peter Safran are concocting a whole new extended universe which will begin with Superman Legacy in July 2025. A new adaptation of the Kryptonian which will therefore be done without Henry Cavill, the new thinking heads wishing to stage a younger Clark Kent. The search is being refined and the casting of the next Superman is nearing completion with three candidates in the running.
Deadline reveals that DC Films and Warner Bros. that a second series of tests, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the controls, would take place on Father’s Day week in the United States. Three actors would be invited for the role of Superman. Nicholas Hoult, who was expected to play Lex Luthor should finally audition to play Clark Kent. The actor known for The Menu, Renfield, X-Men or Mad Max Fury Road, would be on Warner’s radar for a long time. Two other lesser-known names are also mentioned.
David Corenswet, who was the big favorite a few weeks ago and who has already won over many fans because of his resemblance to Henry Cavill and the design of the hero in the comics. Finally, Tom Brittney would be the third serious candidate for the main role of Superman Legacy. The largely unrecognized actor appeared in the film USS Greyhound: The Battle of the Atlantic and in the Grantchester series.
Three names also for Lois Lane
Other names could be added to the list. Deadline explains that several agreements for these testing phases and auditions are still being negotiated. Things are also progressing on the side of Lois Lane. It is always the same three actresses who are in the running. Emma Mackey, star of the series Sex Education from Netflix, Phoebe Dynevor known thanks to the series Bridgerton and finally Rachel Brosnahan seen in The fabulous Mrs. Maisel and House of Cards.
Again, the list may not be exhaustive. James Gunn is keen to watch every audition sent in and began his long-running business after wrapping up the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The names mentioned are those that emerged from his first viewings and a short list was created. As for key roles like Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen, they should be found to have a decision made for Superman and Lois.
