A month before the release of Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese spoke out to call for a powerful response to superhero movie culture and Artificial Intelligence.
On October 18, spectators will finally be able to discover Killers of the Flower Moon, the highly anticipated new feature film by Martin Scorsese. In the meantime, the 80-year-old filmmaker is giving interviews to different media to promote the film.
At the microphone of GQ, Scorsese first called for revolt against the hegemony of Marvel films, superheroes and Artificial Intelligence. The director had already sounded the alarm several times in the past, provoking numerous reactions in the world of cinema and among spectators.

“The danger is what it does to our culture. Because there are going to be generations who think that films are just that. They already think that. That means we have to fight again more. It has to come from the directors themselves.”insisted Martin Scorsese.

The director of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull then compares superhero films to pre-made content. “What I mean is it’s pre-made content. It’s almost like AI making a movie. And that doesn’t mean there aren’t directors and incredible special effects that create beautiful works of art”underlines the artist.
“But what do these films mean? What are they going to achieve? Other than sort of consuming something and then eliminating it from your mind, from your entire body? What does that bring us?”questions Martin Scorsese.
THE INFILTRATES, AN ABORTED FRANCHISE
To broaden his point, Scorsese then mentioned the case of The Departed, for which he won the Oscar for Best Director in 2007. “What they wanted [les dirigeants de Warner Bros], it was a franchise. For them, it was not a moral question about a person’s life or death.”he confided.
The Departed was given test screenings with Scorsese’s desired version, in which the main characters died, and the audience reaction was excellent. Everyone was happy… except the executives at Warner Bros.
“The people at the studio came out of the test screening and they were very sad, because they just didn’t want this movie. They wanted a franchise. So, I said to myself: I can’t work here anymore.”indicated the filmmaker.

If The Departed never had a sequel, this is not the case for the original work from which it is based, Infernal Affairs. Two other feature films in this saga have been released. Warner Bros surely had the idea of continuing to exploit the vein to make The Departed into a trilogy. Good or bad idea ? We’ll let you debate it.
In the meantime, Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone, will arrive in theaters on October 18.
