We rode with one of the lightest electric bikes on the market: carbon stands out

Under 12 kg and featuring a SRAM electronic transmission as well as an unusual motor from Switzerland, the Kilow is a French carbon electric fitness bike that is superb to ride. We were able to try it, here are our first impressions.

We couldn’t be more contradictory than this French manufacturer! Since Kilow, actor of the Savoy group, focuses on lightness. First with La Bagnole, an electric quadricycle with a hell of a face, now with an electric bike which constitutes the continuation of their adventure?

We discovered the “Kilow le Fitness” in person at the Lyon 2 Wheel Show, which also presents a model of electric gravel bike simply called “the gravel”. The only difference between these two models is their handlebars, but both sport a beautiful carbon frame, available in classic matte black or a stunning speckled white.

But at Frandroid, we don’t stop at plucking, and we have passed the rowing (well, pedaling) stage. On a short outdoor track, we rode the Kilow electric fitness bike, giving us a chance to try out the Maxon Bikedrive Air motor.

This Swiss block weighing only 2 kg is invisible and embedded in the crankset, taking a very short time to release the assistance. This assistance is managed via a mini-console located on the upper tube, which allows you to choose from three modes and displays the battery level, which corresponds well to the sporty spirit of the bike.

Although the 40 Nm of torque is less than the 60 Nm of a Fazua or the 50 Nm of a TQ, it is delivered in a lively manner. There is a marked difference between the modes (customizable via the Maxon app), accompanied by a slight characteristic whine, all transmitted to the SRAM transmission.

This drivetrain is electric, an Apex XPLR AXS 12-speed model, with very responsive buttons on the handlebars, a Megatooth chainring and Look pedals. Sram also supplies Level hydraulic brakes with 160mm discs, 2-piston calipers, providing exceptional braking capability.

A very light Kilow

Once we know the assortment of components, we finally benefit from the Kilow Fitness, which weighs 11.6 kg! It’s enjoyable to propel both on electric, – quite easily let’s say – and on muscular, where you have no difficulty in passing 30 km/h with the strength of your legs. The Mavic carbon wheels are more profiled, although the Hutchinson tires are taken from gravel (which offers a little rolling resistance).

However, this choice is motivated by the desire to ensure a Made in France product, from the frame to the assembly of the electric bike. This in no way affects driving pleasure and steering precision.

Great on flat ground, obviously, the reliefs will however draw on its 250 Wh battery which is non-removable, but which provides a range of 30 to 50 km depending on the brand. It is possible to add a second “range extender” battery to double the autonomy, which will probably have to be installed on one of the two sets of fixings available, the others being able to accommodate mudguards for an additional 59 euros.

The riding position is also very comfortable, thanks to the ergonomic Ergotec handles and a Selle Italia SLR Boost saddle, here in the Lady version. However, it is difficult to assess the comfort on the asphalt surrounding the Lyon Motor Show location. Despite limited distribution, the four sizes available, from S to XL, should suit a large majority of users.

Balance your price

With its high-end equipment, its French carbon frame and a motor made in Switzerland, the Kilow electric fitness bike does not surprise you with its price. At 6,090 euros, it is a versatile and ultra-light sports eBike, to take on trails as much as for cycling.
