‘We thought it would be a disaster’: Stranger Things team believed Netflix series would be canceled after 1 season

If today the success of “Stranger Things” is no longer in doubt, this was not the case during the filming of season 1. Some members of the team then thought that the series would be quickly canceled. Fortunately, they were wrong…

Guest on the set of the show BBC’s The One Show, which aired on July 25, David Harbor recounted how he began to lose hope for the future of Stranger Things in the middle of filming season 1, comments also reported by Insider and Variety.

I remember filming the first season. We were in Atlanta, Netflix gave us a budget of about $20“, did he declare. “Halfway through, I remember my hairdresser coming up to me, we were shooting Episode 4, and she was like, ‘I don’t think this is going to work.’

When we finished, I thought we wouldn’t have a second season, that we would be almost the first Netflix show to never have a second season. We thought that no one would watch the series, that it would be a disaster. -David Harbor

But fortunately for him – and for us – the actor was far from the truth. The fourth season of Stranger Things, which recently aired on Netflix, broke records this summer, becoming the platform’s biggest English-language TV season in history.

While the show will end at the end of its season 5, however, Netflix will keep the Stranger Things franchise alive. The creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, are indeed working on a derivative series, while a play taking place in the same world and taking up the same mythology is in preparation.

In an interview earlier this summer, the Duffer Brothers said their idea for a spin-off wouldn’t center on a pre-existing character. “It’s not following… I’ve read these rumors that there’s going to be an Eleven spin-off, there’s going to be a Steve and Dustin spin-off or it’s going to be another issue. It’s not interesting for us because we’ve done all that. We spent I don’t know how many hours exploring it all. So it’s very different“, had then told the duo.

And a spin-off on Hopper then? Even if the showrunners decided to go in this direction, the actor would like to see another actor embody the now cult character.

At this point, I think Hopper is a character who can exist independently of me.“, he told GQ magazine. “If they want to go back in time, forward in time… I would like to see another actor play Hopper and see what he can bring to it…” And David Harbor has even made his choice on who could play a young Hopper: Jacob Elordi, the star of Euphoria and The Kissing Booth.

I think as soon as the series ends, or maybe six months before the end, you’ll hear about the spin-offs that [les frères Duffer] have planned.” Only time will tell.

In the meantime, the 4 seasons of Stranger Things are to be seen or reviewed on Netflix.
