“We were a little naked”: the campers of La-Teste-de-Buch recovered their belongings

REPORTAGE

More than 7,800 hectares of vegetation have already burned in Gironde where the fires are still not fixed. Near the Dune du Pilat, in La-Teste-de-Buch, the situation is stabilizing despite everything. According to the prefecture, nearly 12,000 people have been evacuated since Tuesday and the campers were finally able to collect their belongings yesterday.

Some of them slept until now on folding beds installed at the Parc des Expositions. Others had been rehoused in the surrounding area, in other countryside, sometimes with private individuals. Everyone was therefore impatiently waiting to finally find their caravan or simply their clothes.

“We were a little naked”

Vacationers have certainly collected their belongings, but very quickly and under police escort. The car convoys were flanked by police motorcyclists. Tourists finally leave to pick up their caravans left in these evacuated camps, while specially chartered buses return to allow other holidaymakers to pick up their belongings left in the tents or in the bungalows.

Boris, from the Jura, and Benjamin, from Poitiers, are relieved. “We were able to recover all the clothes, we were a little naked.” Now, the atmosphere is no longer really relaxed for holidaymakers. “Frankly, since we were evacuated, we are more in the spirit of vacation”, they confide to the microphone of Europe 1. “We have a week left, but we will return.”

A quarter of an hour to take the essentials

For her part, Sonia, loading her last luggage into her car, will be able to extend her vacation elsewhere. “On site, we had a quarter of an hour to pick up the essentials, everything that was sentimental. We loaded up. We put everything on the buses and here we are again! Honestly, we are relieved. We had to redo the sorting: the household linen, for example, I left it there. The bath towels too. We took the children’s things and what we could take with both arms and load on the bus. .”

It was obviously not the stay that these tourists had imagined, often a little disappointed, but not to the point of losing their good humor. After the evacuations, we could already hear some campers resume their habits “And now it’s aperitif! It’s important!”
