Greens receive record donation from MV
This windfall is unusual: the Greens usually receive tens of thousands of euros as a single donation. A party member from the northeast is now transferring a seven-digit amount. The man says that he doesn’t want to keep his earnings from trading Bitcoin to himself.
The Greens received a party donation of one million euros. The Bundestag published information on this on its website. It is the highest amount the party has ever received at one time, said a Green spokeswoman.
According to the spokeswoman, the money is intended for the federal election campaign and comes from a Green member from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The independent software developer from Greifswald wanted to provide an impetus for a policy change towards more environmental and climate protection, the spokeswoman said. The money comes from profits from the digital currency Bitcoin.
“The donor has made it clear to us that he sees these profits as undeserved wealth that he does not claim for himself, but wants to use socially for something that corresponds to his convictions,” said the spokeswoman. “In the meantime he sees the Bitcoin system critically, among other things against the background that the necessary arithmetic operations consume huge amounts of electricity.”
Political parties must notify the President of the Bundestag of donations of 50,000 or more. In mid-March, the Greens received a donation of 52,000 euros. This also came from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The donor is a man from Penzlin in the Mecklenburg Lake District.
