The wedding list is a tradition that is losing momentum. In the most traditional weddings, the bride and groom offer their guests a list of objects they would need for their future life together – often: crockery, household linen, kitchen accessories… This list of wedding is often established with a large general store, such as Galeries Lafayette.
“To the extent that most brides and grooms today live under the same roof before saying “I do”, the wedding list is no longer necessarily popular” notes wedding planner Élodie Scherno. For around thirty years, fashion has been at the wedding polls.
The wedding urn, a box to collect guests’ envelopes
What is a wedding urn? “Very concretely, it is a box or a container in which guests can put their greeting cards for the bride and groom… and above all, their envelopes containing money!“
Where to place your wedding urn?
The marriage specialist emphasizes that “the wedding urn is inseparable from the golden table. This (which should not be confused with the head table, the one where the newlyweds eat during the wedding meal!) is a central element of the wedding decoration: there we find in particular the guest book and the urn.“
This golden table should be placed in a sufficiently prominent position so that the guests cannot miss it… and so that the bride and groom can keep an eye on it at all times. Indeed, “we are not safe from the theft of the ballot box during the evening…“
Country, bohemian, nature… Ideas for a wedding urn to match your theme
While it is entirely possible to buy or rent your wedding urn (second hand, for example), on social networks (Instagram and Pinterest in the lead), you can find many ideas for making it yourself . “The ideal is for the wedding urn to be in accordance with the theme chosen by the bride and groom.” specifies Élodie Scherno. Here are some ideas:
- For a country wedding: a bird cage found at a flea market, a rattan basket (new or second-hand) or a mini-greenhouse (wrought iron or stained wood).
- For a rustic wedding: a log of wood (hollowed out, of course). It can possibly be sanded and varnished to make a wedding urn.
- For a vintage wedding: a milk jug (you can easily find them in garden centers… or flea markets!). It can be surrounded with a crown of fresh, dried or preserved flowers.
- For a travel-themed wedding: an old suitcase. Here again, you can customize it using pins, stickers, etc.
How to make your own original, romantic and personalized wedding urn?
“A safe bet (and one that works for many wedding themes) is the transparent glass urn, into which you slip a light garland. It’s very elegant and easy to do” adds the wedding planner. Jars / boxes / jars… in transparent glass can easily be found in “catch-all” stores such as Gifi, Centrakor or La Foir’Fouille. Also think about garden centers and DIY stores.
Still not convinced by these wedding urns? Élodie Scherno offers a final idea, more modern and very popular on social networks: “buy a square wooden box and paint it in wedding colors. Then, using a cutting machine (Cricut), make stickers with the names of the bride and groom to personalize the object.“
Wedding urn or kitty?
Is there an alternative to the wedding urn? Yes: the online prize pool. On the web, several sites and applications allow you to put a wedding kitty online in which guests can participate if they wish (Le pot commun, Leetchi, On Participe, MilleMercisMariage…). Urn, kitty or wedding list: it is therefore up to the bride and groom to decide.
