Your own wedding is a very special day. After months of preparation, it came at some point and you can’t wait to see it. Before the celebrations with friends and family, the bride and groom celebrate their love at the wedding. A marriage promise is usually a part of it, regardless of whether it is a church wedding or a free wedding, e.g. a wedding ceremony. B. at a garden wedding. The bride and groom can choose between self-written and prepared texts. We’ll tell you what is important here.

Tips for the self-written marriage vows

Self-written marriage vows naturally have the advantage that they are personal and individually tailored to your partner. In general, there is no specification of how long the promise should be, but it should not be too long and extravagant, but rather concentrate on the essentials. As the name suggests, it’s all about what you want to promise your partner for the future together. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Anecdote from your relationship that you would like to share with others or sketch a lovable trait in your partner
  • Name what your relationship / love is about
  • Make a promise to your partner
  • Draw a bow to the beginning

This is a rough guide, of course you can also draw up your vows differently. Once the words flow, a lot will come naturally. Here you can find inspiration to get started:

  • What do you love most about your partner?
  • What rough edges do you love about it?
  • What binds you together
  • What is your relationship like?
  • How do you complement each other?
  • What do you share in common?
  • What are your hopes for the future?

It is important that your marriage vows are authentic and honest! If you’re not the goofy type, you don’t have to be for the wedding either. Write down what you feel and what you want – the rest will come by itself.

Examples of finished texts

If you don’t dare to make a promise you have written yourself, you don’t have to despair. You can also express your feelings with a quote, Bible verse, poem, or the classic vow. Below are some examples.

Traditional wedding vows in the church

“(Name of the partner), I take you to my wedded husband / wife, I want to love, respect and honor you all the days of my life, in good and in bad times, in health and illness. Until death do us part . ”

This in turn is followed by the exchange of the rings, possibly with the accompanying word:

“Wear this ring as a token of our love and loyalty: In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Bible verses

  • “Mighty waters are unable to extinguish love, and rivers do not wash it away.” (Song of Songs 8,7)
  • “From the beginning of creation, however, he created them male and female. That is why a man will forsake his father and mother, and the two will be one flesh”; therefore they are no longer two but one flesh. What God has put together, man should not divide. “(Mark 10, 6-9)
  • “This is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15, 12)
  • “Do not owe anything to anyone but love one another! For whoever loves the other has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13: 8)
  • “For God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of strength and love and prudence.” (2 Timothy 1,7)

Poems

It is said that everyone has their star.

I was out looking for yours in the sky.

When I closed my eyes I found him –

in my heart.

(unknown author)

I love you because I have to love you;

I love you because I can’t help it;

I love you after a night sky

I love you by a spell

I love you as the rose her bush;

I love you as the sun does its light;

I love you because you are my breath of life;

I love you because loving you is my being.

(Friedrich Rückert)

I am only aware of my soul in yours, my heart can never rest but only on your breast! My heart can never beat but for you alone. I am so entirely yours, so forever yours.

(Theodor Storm)

Renew marriage vows

There are some wedding anniversaries on which married couples want to reaffirm their love by renewing their vows. Often these are silver weddings and golden weddings. Nice idea: During the renewal, the vows from the wedding ceremony of that time can be taken up. Ultimately, it is up to each couple to decide for which anniversary they want to use this beautiful gesture and whether they want to celebrate it in an intimate way as a couple or as part of a celebration.
