  • In the Tim Burton-directed Addams Family series “Wednesday” on Netflix, the eponymous Wednesday is the main protagonist.
  • Unlike the previous films, the series mainly takes place in a boarding school, the Nevermore Academy.
  • Wednesday is played by Jenna Ortega, who tells interesting things about her collaboration with a former Wednesday actress.

Jenna Ortega is the actress of Wednesday Addams and thus the star of the Netflix series “Wednesday”. In an interview with MTV News, she explained how she and her co-star Christina Ricci were dealing with the legacy of the Wednesday role.

Ortega’s series colleague Christina Ricci also played the role of Wednesday Addams herself. In the “Addams Family” films from 1991 and 1993 she embodied the girl with the dark personality and the fascination for spiders. In the new series adaptation, the Wednesday Addams of yore now plays the “hostel mom” at Nevermore Academy.

No mentoring for “Wednesday” and Jenna Ortega

Although the two actresses are said to have hit it off on set, Jenna Ortega did not seek spiritual guidance for the “Wednesday” role. Neither did Christina Ricci offer it to her, not wanting to influence this new Wednesday version with her own earlier one.

Ortega surmises that Christina Ricci didn’t want to “get in the way” or otherwise influence her performance on this Wednesday Addams role. Equally, however, Ortega herself did not want to bring the subject to the fore, as she found her own Wednesday way and did not want to “imitate” Ricci.

It seems the two actresses have found a good way to deal with their roles and the legacy of the role. According to Ortega, they never even talked about it on set or even said the name “Wednesday” to each other.

On the other hand, Ortega sees a similarity between her and Ricci’s Wedensday performance in the comic drawings by Charles Addams. Otherwise, Ortega considers the two versions of Wednesday to be completely different.

A good and apparently successful approach, because it allowed both the legacy of Christina Ricci’s legendary role to be preserved and something completely new to be created.
