Can weight blankets really calm you down, dispel fears and help you fall asleep? We tested it together with our children. An experience report.

by Marie Stadler

9.30 p.m. All five people who live under my roof (including me) have still not settled down. The week's to-do list rattles up and down in my head, my husband paces around the house collecting all the traces of the day. Upstairs, three children are rolling around in bed. "Mamaaaa, I'm scared!" Shouts the middle one. "I don't want to sleep yet!" Yells the little one. And my big one suddenly stands in front of me, pale as chalk: "I think I can't speak any of the vocabulary any more." It's not like this every day. But sometimes I have the feeling that our house is still vibrating with thoughts, worries and restlessness until late at night. A side effect of our time? Maybe. But that can't be good for all of us.

The internet recommends a weight blanket

I make up my mind to take a closer look at these evenings and start looking for solutions. A friend advises me to do evening rituals that bring calm. But the evening bedtime story has long been one of our fixed structures. "Give the children a footbath in the evening," says a friend. After two water fights and a long bathroom cleaning campaign afterwards, I would not recommend this to be imitated, even for particularly energetic children. Then I ask Google for help … and lo and behold, the search engine spits out something very mystical: Therapy blankets, i.e. blankets that are supposed to distribute weight evenly over the entire body, provide a remedy. Aha. Sounds weird. Just therapeutic. But why not give it a try?

How the weight blanket works

The principle of the weight blanket is not exactly new. They have long been used in hospitals and in the therapeutic sector. They are only just really on the rise for home use. Possibly because the air in other houses still vibrates with energy in the evenings. The blankets should be about as heavy as 10 percent of your own body weight. They do not have to be used overnight, but can also be used for around 20 minutes before going to sleep or during the day if necessary. Then you should use the following three principles to help against anxiety, anxiety and stress:

  1. A deep, even pressure on the body should be one calming effect on the vegetative nervous system to have.
  2. The pleasantly constricting feeling is reminiscent of the safety of the wombin which one felt particularly safe. The same principle is used, for example, when swaddling babies.
  3. The weight of the blanket triggers a similar reaction in the body, which also comes about through a firm hug: the body pours the happiness hormone serotonin and the sleep hormone melatonin out.

Experience report weight blanket: five children, two adults, seven opinions

I ordered a weight blanket for adults (8 kg) and one for children (3 kg). My family and my colleague's family tested.

Our conclusion? Whether the weighted blanket is suitable is completely individual. The big question is not even functionality, but rather your own will to get involved. Not just in children.

Mia (2) found the weighted blanket uncomfortable. Would she have helped? No idea. From where? Lasse (5) also became really aggressive against the weight and immediately kicked himself free. Elea (7), on the other hand, loves the weighted blanket. She explained to us that sandman's sand is sewn into the blanket, which helps against fear. Well, imagination not only creates nightmares and fears, but sometimes also comfort. In fact, Elea has become much calmer with the blanket in the evening and is less afraid of falling asleep. Meral (12) never wants to fall asleep without a weighted blanket again. Since she has put the blanket over herself before going to sleep, she worries much less in the evening and sleeps more easily.

My colleague also liked the even weight. "I love it when a blanket fits snugly. The weight was really comfortable." I myself felt the calming effect and understand the thought. It's actually a bit like being hugged. However, I prefer to be hugged a tiny bit more. For singles or if there is no suitable arm around, the weighted blanket is certainly a nice alternative.

Clear buy recommendation

Manufacturers also know that weighted blankets are not for everyone. At www.therapiedecken.de you can therefore test the healing heavyweights for 28 days before you decide for it or against it. That's enough time, because you can tell very quickly whether you like the weight or not. With the 28-day guarantee, we give you a clear purchase recommendation. At least a little more calm has returned to our house. And that our big one is so excited was a great stroke of luck.
