Skarsgård played It/Penny Flu in the two Andy Muschietti films adapting the novel That by Stephen King, released in theaters in 2017 and 2019.

Welcome to Derry is a prequel series to the novel and these films aimed at exploring this universe in more depth. On this project, Skargård is also executive producer and reunites with his collaborators from ThatAndy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, all three of whom developed the series.

This is not the first time that Skarsgård has taken a turn on a television adaptation of Stephen King’s work, as he was in the casting of the series Castle Rockinspired by different stories by the famous author, in 2018. Like Welcome to Derry, this was already produced by Warner Bros. Television.

Not much is known about the plot of this prequel to Thatexcept that it should take place in the 1960s. In fact, even the title Welcome to Derry seems only temporary. However, we know that Andy Muschietti is directing four of the series’ nine episodes, that Fuchs wrote the script for the pilot and that Brad Caleb Kane (Extinction, Tokyo Vice) is the showrunner.

Skarsgård joins a cast that already includes Taylour Paige (The blues of Ma Rainey), Jovan Adepo (The 3-body problem), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason) and James Remar (Dexter).

As a reminder, the films It: Chapter 1 And 2 grossed $1.17 billion at the worldwide box office. The prequel series was originally scheduled to arrive on Max for Halloween 2024, but due to last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s more likely that it will finally hit our screens sometime in 2025.
