RENNES (awp / afp) – “Welcome to Le Gaulois”: in Rennes, Toulouse and around twenty other cities, the L214 association organized an “open house” day of action on Saturday to denounce with sarcasm the “practices cruelty” of raising chickens marketed by the LDC group.
In total more than 300 activists were mobilized for this day organized simultaneously in 25 cities in France, according to the NGO.
In Rennes, the action took place on the Place de la République. The NGO had installed a large “welcome to Le Gaulois” sign there, with a logo diverted from the brand showing a bloody chicken leg. “Stop cruelty”, could we read on a panel while activists challenged passers-by to make them aware of the breeding practices of the LDC group owner of Le Gaulois, noted an AFP journalist.
“We have noticed that many people do not make the connection between the brand and what is in the tray”, explained François Delporte, co-referent of the local group in Rennes.
Shocking images of abused chickens on the ground, the NGO also invited passers-by to sign a petition, which has already collected more than 132,000 signatures on the site http://bienvenuechezlegaulois.fr.
In Toulouse too, a dozen activists had settled in front of a large supermarket chain in the city center to distribute leaflets and denounce the breeding conditions of the LDC group, owner of the brands Le Gaulois, Maître coq and Marie.
“It is the only large group that resists, they communicate on this but in fact they do not act”, denounced Nicolas Karasiak, 35, activist at L214 for ten years.
L214 which still asks LDC to sign the European charter setting standards to limit the suffering of farmed chickens, recommended by the “European Chicken Commitment (ECC)”.
She also calls for the cessation of the use of fast-growing poultry strains, such as “Ross 308” which allows chickens to weigh 2 kg in 35 days but which exposes them to high risks of heart attacks and diseases. pulmonary.
“Three years after our first exchanges with LDC, and more than a year after the launch of our information campaign, the group (LDC) and its brands (…) still refuse to budge”, recalled Brigitte Gothière, co-founder of L214 in a press release, according to which “this stubbornness testifies to a real contempt for the animal condition and societal expectations”.
