“Welcome to the war”: Selenskyj thanks Musk in a video call

“Welcome after the war”
Selenskyj thanks Musk in a video call

Russian airstrikes endanger Ukraine’s technical infrastructure. The government in Kyiv fears for the Internet and is therefore asking Elon Musk for help. The Tesla boss reacted immediately. In a direct conversation, the Ukrainian President Zelenskyj and the billionaire are planning further projects.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has thanked Tesla CEO Elon Musk for his support of Ukraine. “Next week we will get more Starlink systems for destroyed cities,” writes Zelenskyj Twitter. He spoke to Musk and thanked him for his support of his country in word and deed.

In a short video showing a snippet of Zelenskyy and Musk’s conversation, the Ukrainian President also invited the billionaire to visit Ukraine. “If you have time, you are very welcome after the war,” says Zelenskyj, confident of victory. “Sounds good. I’m looking forward to it,” Musk replies.

The two may then want to discuss cooperation between Ukraine and SpaceX, Musk’s second company – at least that’s what Zelenskyj’s tweet suggests. “Discussed possible space projects. But we’ll talk about that after the war,” Zelenskyj writes confidently.

Call for help from Kyiv

In view of Russian airstrikes on important infrastructure, it was feared that the Ukrainian internet could go down and communications could come to a standstill. The government in Kyiv had asked Musk to help the country with Starlink. The Tesla boss reacted immediately, and the first delivery of the necessary receiving systems arrived in Ukraine at the beginning of March.

The Starlink system establishes fast Internet connections via its own satellites. The system is operated by Musk’s space company SpaceX.
