Wellness hotels are a dime a dozen, but not all keep what they promise. Those who value high quality can rely on the Relax Guide 2023 ranking. This is a kind of wellness bible that anonymously checks more than 1000 hotels in German-speaking countries every year in various categories such as location, ambience, facilities, service and offer. We present the six best houses in Germany that have achieved the highest number of points (four lilies and 20 or 19 out of 20 points).

1. The Kranzbach, Krün, Bavaria

About 15 kilometers from Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the hideaway “das Kranzbach”. The special thing about it: The main building is a castle that was built by an English woman at the beginning of the 20th century and was later supplemented with modern extensions. But not only the building is unique, but also the location: The house stands on a 130,000 square meter meadow at 1300 meters above sea level, surrounded by a wonderful mountain panorama.

Quiet and a view that extends to the Zugspitze are part of the hotel’s basic facilities. The wellness area, for which the bath house was specially built and is connected to the main building with a bridge made of wood and glass, offers everything your heart desires: five indoor and outdoor pools, eight saunas and steam baths, relaxation rooms with fireplaces and an onsen -Cymbal based on the Japanese model.

Another highlight: a meditation house with floor-to-ceiling glass windows in the middle of the forest, which was planned by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma – a magical place to let the mind rest.

2. Elmau Castle, Bavaria

Not far from the Kranzbach and only 18 kilometers from Garmisch is the next dreamlike wellness retreat, which also received the highest score: the five-star Hotel Schloss Elmau. It is located in a high valley at 1000 meters above sea level in front of the breathtaking backdrop of the Wettersteinwand. The G7 summit, to which Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz invited, only took place there last year.

The heads of state may not have done any wellness, but the selection in the hotel is huge: six luxury spas, three for families and three only for adults, offer everything you need to relax: an oriental hammam where you can pamper yourself with soapy massages and Peelings can be treated as well as brine steam baths and Finnish saunas. If you like it original, you can cool off in a pool of the crystal-clear Ferchebach in the Nature Spa after a sauna session. For bathing or swimming lengths, there are five wonderful outdoor pools heated with wood chips to choose from – one of them even filled with salt water.

3. Hotel Bareiss, Baiersbronn, Black Forest

Another top class hotel is the Hotel Bareiss in the tranquil town of Baiersbronn in the Black Forest, which was awarded four lilies and 19 points. It is located on a large park-like area including a game reserve and a trout pond. Even today, the philosophy “There is no no for the guest” still applies in the house, which goes back to the founder Hermine Barreis, who laid the foundation for the family-run company over 70 years ago.

Far beyond the borders of Germany, the house is known for its excellent Kitchen well-known: In the in-house three-star restaurant, Claus-Peter Lump swings the wooden spoon, which has been regularly awarded by the Guide Michelin and Gault Millaut for years. The wellness offer of the house is at least as good: Five different saunas, from the sanarium to the rose steam bath, as well as immersion baths, Kneipp tread baths, whirlpools and fireplace lounges are available to guests. In addition to a natural bathing pond, outdoor pools and paddling pools, guests can relax in two 34-degree seawater pools indoors and outdoors all year round.

  • Evaluation: Four lilies, 19 out of 20 points
  • Prices: One night with half board from 295 euros per person; more info below www.relax-guide.com/bareiss

4. Friedrichsruhe Forest & Castle Hotel, Baden-Wuerttemberg

A small hunting lodge from the 18th century in the middle of a stately 44,000 square meter park – the Hotel Friedrichsruhe is considered to be one of the most beautiful wellness hideaways in the republic by Baden-Württemberg’s Zweiflingevon. The 66 guest rooms and suites are spread over five different and differently designed buildings on the site: if you like it grand, you can of course reside in the castle. The rooms there are furnished with antiques.

The rooms of the spa house, for example, offer a modern ambience. The advantage: From here you can go directly to the 4400 square meter wellness area with sauna world, outdoor pool and indoor pool with fireplace, fitness center and bistro for a snack. Those who like to remain undisturbed can also rent a private 80 square meter spa suite with its own whirlpool, Finnish sauna and lounge. Something else: just 200 meters from the hotel is the 27-hole course of the Heilbronn-Hohenlohe Golf Club, for which hotel guests receive a reduced green fee.

5. Jagdhof Rohrnbach, Bavarian Forest

A dream holiday in the Bavarian Forest – that’s what the Jagdhof Röhrnbach promises to its guests. The climatic health resort of Röhrnbach is around 22 kilometers north of Passau and very close to the Bavarian Forest National Park, one of the largest nature reserves in Europe – perfect for outdoor activities from hiking, cycling to Nordic walking.

The heart of the hotel is the wellness area, with a total of 6500 square meters one of the largest of its kind in the Bavarian hotel landscape. Those who like to be in the water will find a huge bathing landscape here, with indoor and outdoor pools, various whirlpools and saltwater pools, a natural bathing pond and a sports pool with time measurement technology and camera analysis. A special feature in the sauna area: the old mill, a sauna house with salt cellar and relaxation room where guests can enjoy spring water and fresh sourdough bread from the oven.

6. Weissenhaus Grand Village Resort, Schleswig-Holstein

This dream retreat is located directly on the beach on the Baltic Sea between the island of Fehmarn and Kiel. It is a 75 hectare castle estate with ten predominantly historic and stylishly renovated buildings in which the rooms and suites are located: from the castle to the dike cottage to the bakery.

Guests will find wellness at its finest in the Schlosstherme on the premises: This includes pleasantly warm indoor and outdoor pools as well as brine whirlpools and various saunas including steam and salt herb saunas. There are also plenty of treatments on the spa menu: from a classic hammam ceremony to a Hawaiian lomi-lomi temple massage.
