Were there really 85,000 primary injections performed on Friday?

VACCINES – The LaREM boss at the Assembly argued twice that nearly 85,000 people had received a first dose of vaccine for the single day of Friday January 14. A much lower balance sheet in reality.

Guest of BFMTV this Monday, January 17, the deputy Christophe Castaner praised the progress of the vaccination campaign in the country, insisting on these people who change their minds every day by finally opting for the vaccine. “Last Friday, nearly 700,000 people in France were vaccinated. And what is interesting to note is that 85,000 were not the recall. -vaccinated”, assured the leader of the majority in the National Assembly. Figures already relayed the day before, in the hemicycle, facing the deputy Insoumis François Ruffin.

These figures are updated daily by the Directorate General of Health (DGS), affiliated with the ministry, and shared with the press in a press release. But these data correspond to known vaccinations on the date of the press release and not to vaccinations actually carried out on that day. According to the DGS, 692,092 vaccinations against Covid were recorded between Thursday January 13 and Friday January 14. Among them, 606,491 returned to a booster dose and 49,684 to a first dose of vaccine. If the total corresponds to nearly 700,000 known injections in 24 hours, there were not, according to figures from the ministry, 85,000 primary vaccinations that day in France.

To find out the number of people actually vaccinated between Thursday and Friday, you have to dive into public data from Public Health France (SPF). The elements on the daily vaccinated, from December 27, 2020 to today, are grouped together in a table distinguishing the first, second and booster doses, with a slight lag in the publication.

Friday’s figures were therefore only published on Monday evening. And these are far from the results mentioned by Christophe Castaner: during the day, 36,351 first doses were administered, according to SPF. This is aligned with the injections carried out throughout the week, oscillating between 30,000 and 37,000 per day. It is also common that the reports transmitted each day are generally higher than the actual figures: 68,302 vaccinations had been recorded on Wednesday January 12, against 36,386 doses carried out according to SPF, and 48,279 injections had been reported on Thursday 13, against 32,369 actual vaccinations. In summary, whether it is known vaccinations on Friday (nearly 50,000) or those administered (nearly 37,000), no, there were not 85,000 first doses carried out on Friday January 14.
