“Werner plays very badly”: There is mockery for Werner’s chance death

Timo Werner can take his FC Chelsea into the lead in the semi-finals of the Champions League early on. But he forgives against Real Madrid from a very short distance. The German national player is once again a mockery. And there is even harsher criticism.

Timo Werner is the Chelsea player in the 1-1 first leg of the Champions League semi-finals at Real Madrid. Not in a good sense, however. The German national player is rather the one who is joked about, who is treated with malice. Because in the 10th minute he could have put his club in the lead – but failed miserably.

Christian Pulisic fit right in front of the goal to Werner, who was standing free in front of Real keeper Thibaut Courtois, pulled off with his right – and shot the keeper who was able to fend off the ball. Of course, the Belgian parried this shot well, but a striker shouldn’t miss this chance at close range.

After a little more than nine minutes played, it was not already 1-0 for Chelsea. This intermediate result was made five minutes later – because this time Pulisic did it alone. And the former BVB player scored well worth seeing. This time he didn’t care that Werner was also positioned in front of the gate.

“He is insecure”

And Werner? It involuntarily becomes an internet hit. His missed shot made the rounds on Twitter very quickly and was commented on with all kinds of blasphemous posts. You can read about the comparison with FC Schalke there. Or about the muscle man he was at RB and the slim Hansel that he seems to be at Chelsea.

Especially since it wasn’t Werner’s first mistake in the Chelsea jersey. On the contrary. The 25-year-old was not really warm with the game at his new club. In 44 competitive games across all competitions, he has scored eleven goals and prepared twelve goals. Every 139 minutes he was involved in a Blues goal – not a bad rate, but also not a remarkably good one. And the advance praise with which Werner moved from RB Leipzig to the island weighed heavily.

External criticism is also getting louder. Lothar Matthäus said at halftime on Sky: “You noticed: It works for him. After that, he did runs in which he either ran too early, too late or wrongly. He is insecure. At Leipzig he has things almost blind cleaned up, now he’s spoiling such opportunities. ” Ex-striker Marco van Basten expressed himself more drastically at Voetbalzone: “This Werner plays very badly.” Ex-Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt agreed with his compatriot and showed his incomprehension towards Tuchel: “Werner can do what he wants. He always plays.”

Tuchel appeased

But the coach was also not satisfied with his striker: “Timo Werner missed a great chance against West Ham, now he has also missed one here,” he summarized. “It doesn’t help us, but it doesn’t help crying or complaining about it either. It’s just like that.” He further explained that Werner himself was disappointed and sad about it. Just like the team: “We were sad and angry.” But Werner is a professional “and works hard”. Tuchel was certain that if the 25-year-old scored again in the next few games, nobody would talk about the missed opportunities.

It’s not that clear, however, because the fans have long since counted Werner. The striker had recently scored again in the league against West Ham United – for the first time since February 15. But the mockery on the net shows: missed opportunities are not forgotten that quickly.
