West Virginia lawmakers approve near-total abortion ban

The bill prohibits abortion after an embryo is implanted in a woman’s uterus, usually a few days after conception. Minor victims of rape or incest will have up to 14 weeks to terminate their pregnancy, while adult rapists will only have eight weeks to obtain an abortion.

The bill will now go to Republican Governor Jim Justice, who is expected to sign it.

Republican lawmakers wrangled for weeks over how to toughen up the bill, ultimately reducing the period rape victims would have to seek care but removing criminal penalties for doctors.
