While we wait for news about hypothetical SSD
in PCI Express 5.0, Western Digital evokes an SN850X
Almost a year ago to the day, we were testing the WD Black SN850 from Western Digital. This PCI Express 4.0 x4 SSD is still one of the fastest in its class today.
No PCIe 5.0 on the horizon
It would seem, however, that despite this flattering positioning, Western Digital has the idea of offering a new version. This is what a PCI-SIG certification document suggests.
It is about a WD Black SN850X that the American manufacturer has not yet officially announced. We see the mention of a PCI Express 4.0 x4 interface and nothing comes to explain this “X”, only visible difference with the SN850 that we tested last year.
Has Western Digital updated the home controller that equips its SSD? Has he decided to change the flash memory references? Perhaps it is simply a question of adding a new heatsink to it?

There are the M.2 SSD heatsinks, and there is the crazy design ElecGear M11.
