/ Mom / Child / Coronavirus: what symptoms should alert children?

According to a study from King’s College London, the symptoms of children and adults are not the same. Thus, the youngest are mainly affected by fatigue and headaches, but they are also prone to rashes.

Since the start of the pandemic, the virus has spared children more than adults, as the infection is generally reported to be milder or asymptomatic. In addition, scientists estimated that at age 7 or 77, the symptoms were the same.

But according to a study conducted by King's College London, the most common symptoms vary from child to adult, namely, fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, unusual fatigue, sudden loss. smell and taste or even diarrhea.

Symptoms that fluctuate with age

In younger people, the common symptoms would be fatigue and headaches, however they would also be prone to rashes. In addition, the symptoms would not be the same depending on the age. Indeed, according to a study by the NHS, published on Monday, September 7, the most common symptoms in children are fatigue, headaches and fever. While adults suffer more from coughing or loss of taste and smell.

"We need to start telling people what the main symptoms are at different ages rather than this general obsession with fever, cough and loss of smell," says Professor Tim Spector who conducted the study.

According to figures based on the case of 198 British children infected out of 16,000 children screened, a third of the children were asymptomatic. Nevertheless, 55% of infected children felt fatigue and 54% headaches. Unlike adults, only 38% had a sore throat and 35% no longer had an appetite, 13% had diarrhea and 15% had a rash.

The study's authors want UK authorities to add the rash to the official symptoms of the coronavirus. "One in six children will get (a rash) and this will often be the only sign", emphasizes Tim Spector.
