Origin of “Emoji”

The Japanese Shigetaka Kurita is considered to be the inventor of “emojis”. In 1999, he received an order from a telecommunications company to develop small images that could then be used in the text messages that were limited in characters at the time.

The result was a set of 176 images that have now evolved into thousands of “emojis.” If we go further into history, we also find the name Harvey Ball – the inventor of smileys in 1963. Without his invention, today’s “emojis” would probably not exist in this form.

An “emoji” as word of the year

We all know the word of the year elections. In Germany, the terms crisis mode, turning point or breakwater have taken first place in recent years. This choice also exists in other countries, for example in Great Britain.

In 2015, the “Oxford Dictionaries” didn’t choose a real word, but rather the “face with tears of joy emoji”. This choice underlines the importance that small pictures have today. A little fact on the side: This “laughing emoji” is in first place in worldwide usage with five percent.

By the way: Many emojis have not just one, but several meanings. This can lead to some emojis being used incorrectly and causing confusion. In the linked article we show you the true meaning of the most popular symbols.
