What does “Schrat” mean? definition and explanation

The comedy series Jerks, which has been running since 2017, is about the two German actors Christian Ulmen and Yardım, who play themselves and bring a mixture of fictional and personal experiences to the TV screen.

In one scene, the two sit eating and Christian Ulmen talks about his wife Collien Fernandes and, in contrast to her, describes himself as a “schrat” or “feuilleton handsome”. The expression Schrat already existed before the series and comes from the Germanic language. In Middle High German it can be derived from the term “Schraz”. Just as the origins of most words are unknown, there is also a variety of meanings for Schrat. Most of them revolve around magical beings like a wizard, a goblin or a water spirit. However, Schrat is most likely to be translated in the meaning of jerks as a fool.

“Schrat”: Jerks makes the term famous

In the mythology of the word, a schrat is described as a reclusive being who has magical abilities, but uses them not for the benefit of mankind, but to spread nightmares and hallucinations.

An extension of the term is the “Waldschrat”, which is used to describe a rude man, who comes to the fore mainly because of his unkempt appearance. Jerks also seems to allude to this interpretation, since Christian Ulmen is not always particularly well-groomed in his television appearance, but rather a bit natural and with an outdated style of clothing. With the term he simply wants to express that he would classify himself on a lower level than his wife Collin. You shouldn’t call your “Bruhs” and “BFFs” Schrat.
