fun, news, tips … what else?

Each week, aufeminin deciphers for you the games that are successful, the rising trends, the favorite objects or the most cryptic expressions of your teenagers … just to be up to date (and finally, understand them).

For this new “T’as la ref?”, We wanted to dissect the famous expression “c’est cheum”, often said in a haughty or jaded tone and heard over and over again in the mouths of young people. But what does that mean exactly?

“But what is he … she is cheum ohlala …”. From “yomb” (translation: to be angry) to “la peufra” (hits) to have “coiled” (to have money)… The slang of our teenagers continues to twist and enrich the language French. This is the little lexicon of “talking young”. You’ve probably been hearing it for a few years now. Whether in the street or when you turn on your television and you come across the reality TV show “Les Marseillais VS le Reste du Monde” broadcast on W9, to name but one, the observation is always the same: you don’t not really know what that word means. And yet if we listen well we have a little clue that should make us tilt …

What does cheum mean?

The word cheum is the translation of “moche” in verlan. We can use it to qualify a situation : “Frankly, you are really a boloss, it is cheum to have done that!” or then to qualify a garment : “This shirt is really cool…”, but also quite simply to talk abouta physical (even if it’s never very nice): “I have never seen such a cute nose in all my life.” In any case, the expression is pejorative, it is absolutely not positive.

In contrast, in Canada, locals often use the word “chum”, which does not include an “e” and has a completely different meaning. He designates a friend, a comrade or even a boyfriend. It’s good to know so as not to make a mistake!

“Cheum” in music!

As for “T’as dead ça”, the word “cheum” has inspired artists including rapper Nekfeu. In 2019, in his album Les Étoiles vagabondes (2019), he released a music called “Cheum” and in which the lyrics are very clear: “In college I was cheum but deter ‘like a chleuh I flew Playstations, I resold them, I bought myself games What’s in the minds of young people? I was hanging out all over Beriz I was making spikes with gel, I had Reese’s haircut. I am the most beautiful of the ugly, I am the most beautiful of the ugly I am the most beautiful of the ugly, I am the most beautiful of the ugly, I am the most beautiful of the ugly ugly, I’m awful“.
