Not easy to know which dog to adopt when you have one or more children. A canine behavior expert explains which breeds to avoid.

Adopting a dog is not an easy decision to make, especially when you have children. Several studies have shown that the fact ofhaving a pet had a positive impact on the young child, this notably facilitates contacts and interactions with others. Big or small, long-haired or short-haired, affectionate or independent, our dog friends and their little puppies are nearly 8 million in France. If you plan to welcome a pet into your home, do not forget however that you are responsible for his safety but also that of your children.

If certain breeds of dogs have a character adapted to cohabitation with children, others, on the contrary, are to be avoided. On his Tiktok account Will Atherton, British canine behaviorist, explains why. “As a canine behaviorist I know when things go wrong with dogs and unfortunately that results in biting towards children. And I find that some breeds come back more often than others,” he explains.

What Dog Breeds Should Children Avoid?

The first of these is the Border Collie: “People think that because they’re easier to train, they’re easy dogs to live with. But that’s not true. His herding instincts will manifest and if you don’t respect the dog properly, which many people don’t have the time or energy to do, they will start to behave with your children as with the animals of a herd”. Indeed, the dog can then show its fangs, bark or even bite when it is upset.

The second breed of dog noted by the expert is the Akita: “I love Akitas and in the right situations they can be amazing dogs.I see them having serious problems with the children and it’s never pretty when that happens.” And to conclude the list, the expert explained that the Dalmatian was also to be avoided when you have young children. “Most people don’t know that the Dalmatian has one of the highest bite rates the UK. And often towards children.”, he explained.

As a reminder, pay attention to never leave your dog alone with your baby or your toddler. The dog remains an animal with reactions that can be primitive if your child hurts or frightens him, even if his intention is not to harm him. It is the same with your cat.
