The list of state-recommended free software continues to grow. They are now 359 to be advised. At the same time, the dedicated website received a welcome overhaul.
The new interministerial base of free software (SILL) is there. For this 2023 edition, the list amounts to 359 computer programs recommended for use in the administration. The 2022 edition listed 287 as of mid-August. The complete list, announced May 11can be viewed on the SILL website.
Several dozen free software added
What’s new in this new edition? We can mention the Angular JavaScript framework, the DBeaver database management software and the PHP discussion forum PHPBB3. There is also the data erasing tool ShredOS or Arduino IDE, an integrated development environment for programming microcontrollers.
These specialized tools are aimed more at a computer-savvy audience. However, there are also applications designed for office automation and more general use. We can cite Firefox for web browsing, LibreOffice for the office suite (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.) or VLC for playing videos or sounds.
While this is officially the 2023 edition of SILL, updates are actually happening on the fly, with new entries being added every week or so. What changes above all here is the site which has benefited from a welcome update. New search filters have been added to make it easier to discover tools based on the needs of public service members.
There is in particular a category of “essential” for his workstation (there are a hundred software, including 7-Zip, Gimp, Grammalecte, KeePass, OBS Studio or even uBlock Origin). It is also possible to classify the results according to the latest program additions, recent software updates or according to their popularity.
Two filters are also worth noting: there is one that allows you to display software that is waiting for a referent (with the watermark message to invite anyone who knows about it to offer themselves as a guide) . Forty software are in this situation. The other allows you to see the tools that can benefit from specific support. Nearly a third of the tools listed are eligible for these maintenance services.
