Last night hundreds of thousands of instant messaging incidents were reported WhatsApp. A second global outage in less than a year prompted Meta to quickly study the problem.

More than 20,000 incidents have been reported in France on Downdetector.

WhatsApp is broken?

Last night, around 10 p.m. (French time), WhatsApp found itself trending on social networks. As often, this is because many email users were wondering if they were the only ones unable to use Meta’s app anymore, or if it was a more general outage. Unsurprisingly, they quickly discovered that they had nothing to do with the situation and that the service was having major connection issues globally.

According to Downdetector, which aggregates reports from users and professionals, over 177,000 people were affected by the outage in the UK, at least 41,000 reported an issue in the US and India while in France, Downdetector recorded just over 20,000 incidents. Very quickly, WhatsApp let it be known that work to resolve the problem was in progress, and that everything was being done to find a solution.

About twenty minutes after the tweet was posted informing users that the teams were on it, a second tweet came out announcing that the issue was resolved and it was possible to resume discussions. A breakdown of an hour which obviously did not have major consequences, the origin of which has not been revealed. As of this writing, WhatsApp is fully accessible.

Recurring outages

If the story of this breakdown evokes something for you, it is normal. On October 25, an outage affecting WhatsApp was declared. For almost two hours, almost no one was able to access messaging, whether on iOS or Android. Meta has fixed the issue, but it is still unclear what caused the services to be interrupted.

However, the biggest outage remains the October 2021 outage, which took down Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger for a good half day. Meta had finally found a solution, explaining that a “faulty” configuration change to the routers had created a domino effect at the server level. Incidents have largely benefited Telegram, Signal and Twitter, where outages have been massively commented on and discussions have continued.

It’s simple, WhatsApp is a fantastic instant messaging application that also offers basic voice and video calls. The less demanding will find their account, the others much less with the impoverished desktop version and the limit of group calls to eight participants.
