What happens to Grogu and the Mandalorian? We summarize the series on Boba Fett

Season 2 of The Mandalorian ends with the separation on a twist. Yet in season 3, everything seems to be going as if nothing had happened for Grogu and the Mandalorian. To understand what happened, you have to have seen the series The Book of Boba Fett.

Good news: season 3 of The Mandalorian releases March 1, 2023. Bad news: it doesn’t start exactly where Season 2 left off, as you may have realized when the trailer dropped. Indeed, the previous season ends with the separation of Grogu and the Mandalorian, while the 3 begins with the two characters reunited, as if nothing had happened. To attend the reunion, the series requires you to watch The Boba Fett Book.

It’s never clearly stated in the trailers that you must have seen Boba Fett to understand the plot of season 3 of The Mandalorian. Besides, The Boba Fett Book is a really, really, really bad series, and you have to have followed it until the end to attend the reunion of the two companions. As we love you very much, we watched The Boba Fett Book in full so you don’t have to (no, don’t thank us).

Here’s everything you need to know about Din Djarin and Grogu’s reunion.

What happens at the end of The Mandalorian season 2 ?

Season 2 ends with the separation between Grogu and Din Djarin. The first leaves with Luke Skywalker to undergo training and become a Jedi, and the second, in an emotional moment, takes off his helmet to say goodbye to his adopted son.

The Mandalorian then continues his journey alone, still in possession of the black saber, which he won during his fight against Moff Gideon. Boba Fett has infiltrated the old fortress of Jabba The Hutt, now in the hands of Bib Fortuna, the former right-hand man of the crime lord. He kills the latter and thus takes his place.

What’s going on in The Boba Fett Book ?

Boba Fett becomes a crime lord

It seems illogical at first glance, but Boba’s Book is actually more of a season 2.5 of The Mandalorian than a truly separate and independent work. Given that the two bounty hunters meet in season 2, it would have been difficult to consider Boba Fett as a series in its own right anyway.

At the beginning of Book, therefore, Boba Fett is the new daimyo, the local crime lord of Tatooine. A situation contested by several people, determined to take its place. This semblance of political intrigue could have been interesting, but like so much else in the series, it all falls flat due to a very poorly crafted script, absolutely lousy lines, and a general lack of charisma — or, at least, of direction of the acting – of the comedian incarnating Boba Fett. We are light years away fromAndor.

In parallel with this plot, we discover through several flashbacks what happened to Boba Fett during all these years. In Episode VI, Return of the Jedi, we see the mercenary fall into the mouth of the Sarlacc, a terrible monster of Tatooine. We then discover that he owes his survival to his Beskar armor and his flamethrower. He still comes out of the hole badly damaged, loses consciousness, and has his armor stolen by Jawas. Later, he is taken prisoner by men of the sands (the Tuskens), who end up making him one of their own.

The plot in the past is very clearly the least terrible part thanks to the absence of dialogue (therefore we escape platitudes of the style ” stealing is a crime », a sentence really pronounced during episode 3). However, the series is too slow and poorly produced: the two paragraphs above summarize 4 episodes of 50 minutes, it’s awfully long.

What Happens to The Mandalorian and Grogu?

Fortunately, the series becomes pleasant again from episode 5, because much more time is devoted to the Mandalorian and we hardly see Boba Fett. If you ever want to watch the series despite everything, we strongly advise you to start from episode 5 and save yourself the first 4.

We find Din Djarin, who resumed his role as bounty hunter, and who finds during a mission the Armorer and another Mandalorian. The Armorer explains to him that the darksaber he possesses is not just any weapon: whoever wins it in combat has the right to reign on the planet Mandalore. None of that.

Well, there is still a problem: Mandalore was almost completely destroyed by wars, and no one would live there anymore. Din Djarin will still have to go back there: he admits to the Armorer that he took off his helmet, a sin that he will have to atone for on the planet. Before he leaves, the Armorer forges at Din Djarin’s request a chain mail armor in Baskar for Grogu.

A rather valuable gift, which he wants to deliver to Baby Yoda himself. But once arrived on the planet where her adopted son is, Ahsoka Tano advises her not to see him: it would only make things more difficult for the child. Din Djarin therefore gives the chain mail to Ahsoka and leaves, without seeing Grogu. We guess Din’s suffering, despite the helmet.

We then find Grogu, who trains with Luke Skywalker to master the Force. We learn that “baby Yoda” was on Coruscant during the massacre of the Jedi that we see in episode III, Revenge of the Sith, but it is not known how he was able to survive. Luke sees that his student is making progress, but that he is however a little absent: he misses his adoptive father. The Jedi master then leaves him the choice between two objects: he offers him to take Yoda’s old lightsaber and continue the training; or the coat of mail in Beskar, to go find his father.

How does Grogu and the Mandalorian end up?

Of course, Grogu chooses chain mail, otherwise we wouldn’t be here, and I shouldn’t have had to go through all those Boba Fett episodes during my weekend. Brief.

Grogu therefore returns to Tatooine, where Din Djarin went at the request of Boba Fett to help him beat all the bad guys who want to steal his territory. There is a big battle in the town of Mos Espa including a rather pleasant passage where we see a Rancor (the big beast that we see in episode VI, Return of the Jedi, in Jabba’s palace) fight with a robot. Grogu arrives in the middle of it all, while Din Djarin is having a very bad time, and saves him TWICE using the Force.

Thanks to Grogu, all’s well that ends well. The bad guys are beaten, Boba Fett can remain daimyo, and in the end all the inhabitants of Mos Espa are even happy to prostrate themselves every day in front of him (yes yes, we’re not making this up).

After making lots of cute hugs, Grogu and Din Djarin set off together for new adventures in a new spaceship. And There you go ! You should now be able to follow Season 3 of The Mandalorian no problem, and without having to watch in full The Boba Fett Book. Lucky guys.
