The finitude of being is still a taboo. Death must not be. Even less the death of a child. But the reality is: in Switzerland alone, 5,000 children are living with an illness with no prospect of a cure. And so around 400 to 500 children die here every year.
Their diseases are often highly complex, require the daily administration of a number of medications and the implementation of numerous therapies. In this way, parents involuntarily become experts on diseases that even doctors often know very little about. Children’s rooms become small intensive care units. Families are reaching their limits. Also because, compared to other European countries, Switzerland offers these children and their families little support.
“NZZ Format” tells the story of 11-year-old Keno and 3-year-old Chloé and their parents, who fight every day to make their children’s probably short lives as worth living as possible.
