THE graphics cards could they be damaged by the RGB lighting of our RAM memory sticks ? And our eyes?
Very fashionable, RGB LEDs are present on many components from cases to graphics cards including mice, keyboards or even RAM sticks.
Precisely, these are the strips which are today being singled out while several testimonies report the degradation of their hardware, in this case the graphics card backplates.
Several cases in a few hours
Could it be that a movement has been initiated? In the space of 24 hours, two Reddit users have indeed highlighted – no pun intended – a problem undoubtedly linked to the RGB lighting of their RAM.
It was when wanting to change their GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card that the two users noticed a deterioration in the backplate, this metal plate which “dresses” the card while ensuring the cooling of certain components.
The backplate is now permanently marked with a design that more than recalls the lighting of the RAM modules used in the PC. A simple glance at the photos taken by users is enough to realize that there is necessarily a cause and effect link.
Burns linked to the materials used?
Since then, the two users have been joined by other enthusiasts with, each time, the same problem: the RGB lighting of the RAM modules gives the impression of having marked the backplate.
A first hypothesis was put forward: the heat emitted by the diodes could have marked the backplate. Another hypothesis, considered more credible, is linked to the ultraviolet emitted by the RGB lighting of the strips. Ultraviolet radiation around 400 nm could have “burned” the materials, not always of good quality, which cover the backplate.
Burns which do not seem to affect the operation of the graphics cards, but which still raise the question of the dangerousness of these RGB LEDs. We obviously think of our small retinas for which the risk of blue LEDs has already been mentioned, even if RAM manufacturers must ensure the harmless nature of their products.
