Do you know your clitoris? Behind this somewhat abrupt question hides a taboo that is still present. In France, it was not until 2016 that an independent researcher, Odile Fillod, modeled it for the first time on a real scale and in 3D. A new tool for sex education, essential to familiarize students with the little-known organ. Indeed, the study of the Terpan laboratory and the magazine So What? went to meet, in 2017, more than 500 women in order to carry out a first survey on the theme of "the woman of the 21st century and her intimacy". According to their results, 35% of them said they had never seen their clitoris. Likewise, before 2017, Magnard was the only publisher to fully represent the sexual organ in an SVT textbook, as Liberation reminded us in 2019.
Self help to the rescue
The feminist movement "help yourself", in the language of Molière, was born in the 1970s in the United States. At the outset, "self help" was a militant weapon so that women had access to free contraception as well as the right to abortion. Seeing that women knew very little about their intimacy, the activists directed their fight towards the liberation of the body, the fact of better taming it and loving it. The "self selp" has therefore established workshops for self-exploration of female anatomy. For example, with the help of a mirror and a speculum, in a small circle, the activists began to observe their sex. Little by little, the practice was exported.
