What is the Islamic State in Khorasan, which claimed responsibility for the Moscow attack? Understand in three minutes

It’s 10 p.m. Friday, March 22. The roof of Crocus City Hall, a suburb of Moscow, is still burning when the Islamic State (IS) organization claims responsibility for the attack on the concert hall. At least 139 people have died. The branch of ISIS behind the attack is not the one that France faced in the 2010s. It bears a name that was until then less familiar: the Islamic State in Khorasan ( EI-K).

The organization that Russia faces today constitutes the branch of the jihadist group in Central Asia, resulting from a reorganization following the defeats suffered by ISIS in Iran and Syria between 2017 and 2019. It is today established in Afghanistan, taking advantage of the disorganization caused by the takeover of power by the Taliban, and in the surrounding countries.

In this video we explain where these terrorists come from, how the group took root in this area and what threat they pose. If you want to know more, we recommend this analysis by our investigative journalist Jacques Follorou.
