What is the use of the QR Code appearing on the electoral cards?

The new electoral maps unveiled by the Ministry of the Interior include a QR Code. And contrary to what the fearmongers say, it’s only for getting information.

It’s the new scarecrow held up by the conspiracy theorists, Florian Philippot in mind, that one suspects more absolute bad faith than real ignorance of the subject. Will the new electoral map, presented on February 2, turn into a plotter or a “citizen pass” as we have read on social networks? Nay.

This QR Code, which does not condition access to the polling station, nor does it contain any information on the card holder, is the same for everyone. Once scanned, it directs to the institutional site dedicated to the elections. On the program: countdown to the first round and, above all, the possibility of finding out about the main online procedures related to voting. The user will thus be able to verify that he is registered on the electoral lists, to find his polling station, or to make a proxy request.

“The www.elections.interieur.gouv.fr site also allows you to access content to understand the democratic role and purpose of voting, the different types of elections organized in France, the competence of elected officials, etc.”, is also mentioned.

It should also be remembered that the QR Code was not invented for the “Covid period” alone. If the latter contributed to bringing it back into fashion, and to all the tables of your favorite restaurants and bars, it was born in Japan in 1994 and has since spread widely throughout the world.
